At The Switch #03604
On a beautiful Saturday in Fall, here are switching maneuvers in the East Broad Top Railroad Rockhill yard as the brakeman/fireman is about to flip to the other track and the engineer waits with his hand on the throttle. The big tea kettle just hisses away.
I had climbed high onto the coaling tower above the tracks to take this shot on slide film years ago, scruffing my way up the steep earthen bank using small scrub trees as handholds. It was a great vantage point, and I was completely unseen by the crew or any train passengers in the cars thirty feet below.
#14 is a 2-8-2 and was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia in 1912. This locomotive and her five narrow gauge sisters were all Baldwin built between 1911 and 1920, and all are still on the property.
